8 tablespoons sugar
1 tablespoon cornstarch
1/2 cup water
3 egg whites
1/8 teaspoon salt
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
dash cream of tartar

Combine cornstarch, water and 2 tablespoons of sugar in saucepan. Cook until thick and clear over medium heat.

In large bowl, beat egg whites, salt, cream of tartar and vanilla until soft mounds.

Alternate between the remaining sugar and hot mixture, adding them to egg white bowl gradually while beating until very stiff peaks.
